Jacob Zuma
By Thys Khiba After 64 years as a member of the African National Congress (ANC), former president Jacob Zuma has announced that he will vote for the Umkhonto We Sizwe MK party in the coming elections of 2024.
During a press conference, Zuma made the announcement at the Ipeleng Community Centre in Soweto in Gauteng on Saturday afternoon.
Zuma indicated that the party was registered with the Electoral Commission of SA (IEC).
“I therefore wish to announce that in 2024, I will vote for the Umkhonto We Sizwe (MK) Party. It has already been registered with the IEC with my knowledge and blessings, in response to various pleas expressed to me by some religious leaders, traditional leaders, former combatants and other leaders in society,” said Zuma.
Zuma served as the fourth president of South Africa from 2009 to 2018.
Zuma said he could never leave the ANC, but claimed the ANC is no longer the party he joined 64 years ago.
“I have always been ready to serve the ANC at any level and my track record reflects that. I truly believe in the mandate of the ANC and I will continue to serve my organisation. I will die a member of the ANC,” Zuma said.
Zuma accused his successor, President Cyril Ramaphosa of introducing practices that are “foreign” in the ANC. He suggested that he is going to “rescue” the ANC by not voting for it in the coming elections.
“..I have full sympathy with those comrades who believe that the ANC can no longer be saved from within its nonexistent structures. Something more bold, creative and dramatic needs to be done by those who love the real ANC.”
In a statement read by his daughter Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, Zuma accused the ANC of expelling its former secretary-general Ace Magashule using the “selective application” of the party step-aside rule, but is allowing Ramaphosa who is also facing “criminal charges” to campaign for it.
The newly announced party is expected to announced its interim leadership in the early part of 2024.
The EFF member Carl Niehaus has congratulated Zuma for deciding not to campaign for his party, ANC in the coming elections.
“I warmly congratulate president Jacob Zuma on having taken the correct decision not to campaign for the sell out ANC.
“It is my ardent hope that President Zuma will contribute to forging UNITY between all the forces of the progressive left, said Niehaus in a social media post.
