South Africa’s Transport Minister, Sindisiwe Chikunga, has called on all road users to obey the rules of the road and for motorists to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on a trip. The Minister emphasized the importance of avoiding driving under the influence of alcohol to reduce the number of road crashes and fatalities.

During the launch of the Festive Season Road Safety Awareness Campaign on the N3 Heidelberg Weighbridge in Johannesburg, Minister Chikunga highlighted the impact of road crashes on pedestrians and victims of hit and run incidents. She emphasized that these factors are often related to human behavior and urged all road users, including pedestrians, to act responsibly and follow designated crossing areas.

The ongoing campaign, spearheaded by the Department of Transport, aims to promote safer road usage during the high peak season on South African roads. It focuses on ensuring smooth traffic flow and preventing negligent and reckless driving, which can lead to road crashes, injuries, and fatalities.

The Minister stressed the collaborative nature of the campaign, which involves various levels of government, transport entities, private sector organizations, NGOs, and key stakeholders. This coordinated effort reflects the urgency and significance of addressing road safety issues during the festive season.

The festive season in South Africa is typically marked by increased traffic volumes, year-end celebrations, and economic industry slowdowns. Unfortunately, this period also sees a rise in road crash incidents, with pedestrians and passengers being the most vulnerable. Many of these incidents are attributed to the lack of safety measures, such as the non-use of seat belts and jaywalking.

Makhosini Msibi, CEO of the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), emphasized the focus on law enforcement during the festive season. He noted that fatigue among truck drivers is a significant factor in fatal crashes, and efforts will be made to engage with the trucking industry to address this issue.
