Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) has joined forces with global Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) giant, Petredec, to revolutionise the distribution of LPG across South Africa. This partnership aims to address the country’s growing energy needs by introducing a cutting-edge rail freight solution and infrastructure investment that promises to enhance the accessibility and affordability of clean energy solutions.
A Groundbreaking Rail Freight Solution
Announced in September 2024, this joint initiative marks a pivotal moment for South Africa’s energy landscape. The agreement outlines the development of a dedicated LPG train system, alongside the construction of a state-of-the-art LPG intermodal hub and storage facility at Sentrarand in Gauteng. This modern infrastructure will enable more efficient and environmentally friendly distribution of LPG, ensuring the resource can be delivered on a larger scale than ever before in Africa .
The new LPG distribution system will rely on scheduled trains, each comprising 75 wagons capable of transporting over 2,500 tonnes of LPG per journey. Initially, these trains are expected to run up to three times a week, from the Richards Bay LPG terminal in KwaZulu-Natal, a facility developed in partnership with Bidvest Tank Terminals in 2020. This enhanced logistical approach is set to significantly improve the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of LPG supply .
Supporting South Africa’s Energy Security
TFR’s Group Chief Executive, Michelle Phillips, emphasized that this initiative plays a critical role in bolstering South Africa’s energy security. The Sentrarand hub, strategically positioned to serve Gauteng’s economic heartland, will also benefit the broader Southern African Development Community (SADC) region, offering a key staging post for regional distribution .
“This landmark project marks a major advancement in the supply of LPG across the country, enabling bulk distribution on a scale never before seen in Africa,” Phillips stated. She highlighted that the project is not only crucial for energy security but also for the country’s broader developmental ambitions .
A Vision for Affordable and Clean Energy
For Petredec, this partnership aligns with its broader goal of making clean energy solutions like LPG more accessible to the South African market. Jonathan Fancher, CEO of Petredec, noted that the project reflects the company’s commitment to improving LPG accessibility, particularly for households reliant on clean cooking solutions. This effort aims to reduce the use of harmful solid biomass and kerosene, which are still prevalent across sub-Saharan Africa and disproportionately affect women and children .
“Our goal is to enhance energy security, affordability, and environmental conservation in South Africa,” Fancher remarked. He added that this project would not only meet the current LPG demand but also support South Africa’s long-term energy needs.
