The incident, which occurred yesterday afternoon, Wednesday, 8 May 2023, involved Kamogelo Leepile, who tragically lost his life after being stabbed thrice by a 9-year-old Grade 4 student from the neighbouring Monamodi Primary School. The altercation took place near their homes after school, with Kamogelo succumbing to his injuries at the scene.

Howard Ndaba, spokesperson for the Free State Department of Education, relayed information suggesting that the young suspect had previously voiced concerns over being consistently bullied by Kamogelo and his brother. This revelation adds a complex layer to the tragedy, highlighting the pervasive issue of bullying within schools. The suspect has since been taken into police custody as investigations into the incident proceed.

MEC Mohale expressed profound shock and sorrow over the incident, emphasising the imperative need for schools to be sanctuaries of safety for both learners and educators. Describing the event as “abhorrent and a travesty,” Mohale extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and the school community, acknowledging the irreplaceable loss of a young life.

The tragedy has prompted Mohale to strongly condemn learner misconduct and bullying, issuing a call to action for parents to collaborate closely with schools in fostering discipline and vigilance. This incident, witnessed by other learners on their way home, has underscored the urgent need for community-wide engagement in creating secure educational environments.

To address the immediate emotional fallout, psycho-social services have been dispatched to both WSM Malotle and Monamodi Primary Schools, offering counselling and support to learners and staff affected by this tragedy.

MEC Mohale’s message was clear: “We cannot and will not tolerate delinquency and lawlessness in our schools.” He implored parents, communities, and law enforcement agencies to unite in nurturing responsible citizens and ensuring the safety of all learners. School Based Support Teams (SBTs) have been urged to stay vigilant, detecting early signs of distress or aggressive behavior among students to prevent any future incidents of this nature.
