Tragic Drowning Inciden
By Mpho Moloi
A 19-year-old male tragically drowned at the Kabeljous River Mouth in Jeffreys Bay on Boxing Day. The incident occurred when he and a 13-year-old boy were caught in a rip current while wading in the surf during an incoming tide. A quick-thinking fisherman managed to save the younger teen by casting his fishing line and reeling him to safety. Unfortunately, the older teen was swept out to sea.
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) launched a search operation for the missing teenager. NSRI rescue swimmers were deployed into the water, and during the search, they located the unresponsive teenager. He was brought back to shore, where paramedics and a doctor declared him deceased.
This incident highlights the dangers of rip currents along the South African coastline. The NSRI has previously reported on similar incidents in the area, emphasizing the need for public awareness and caution when swimming in the ocean. They advise beachgoers to swim only at beaches with lifeguards on duty and to be aware of the risks posed by rip currents.
The NSRI’s Pink Rescue Buoy initiative has been instrumental in saving lives along the coast. These buoys are strategically placed at various beaches and have been used in multiple rescue operations. The public is encouraged to familiarize themselves with the locations of these buoys and to use them in emergencies.
