Tragic Collision on N6

A devastating head-on collision between a minibus taxi and a truck on the N6 highway, approximately three kilometres outside Smithfield in the Free State, resulted in the deaths of at least three individuals on Tuesday afternoon.
Free State Police spokesperson, Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli, confirmed the fatalities and noted that the truck caught fire following the impact.
The truck driver sustained injuries and has been admitted to a local hospital.
The exact cause of the accident remains under investigation.
Emergency Response and Investigation
Emergency services promptly arrived at the scene to manage the aftermath of the collision.
Their immediate priorities included extinguishing the truck fire, attending to the injured, and securing the area to prevent further incidents.
Sergeant Kareli stated, “Emergency personnel are at the scene and have confirmed that three people have lost their lives, and the truck caught fire.”
The injured truck driver was swiftly transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
Authorities have initiated a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances leading to this tragic event.
Recent Accidents on the N6
This incident adds to a series of unfortunate accidents on the N6 highway in recent times.
In July 2023, a catastrophic collision between a bus and a truck on the same route, between Rouxville and Smithfield, resulted in seven fatalities, including both drivers, and left numerous passengers injured. 
The July 2023 accident involved a City-to-City bus traveling towards Rouxville and a truck heading to Smithfield.
The head-on collision occurred around 04:00, leading to significant loss of life and injuries.
Emergency services reported that 36 individuals sustained injuries, with varying degrees of severity, and were transported to the Stoffel Coetzee Hospital in Smithfield for treatment.
