Tragic Accident on R76 Highway
Viljoenskroon – A devastating road accident on the R76 highway outside Viljoenskroon in the Free State has left three children dead and several others, including adults and more children, injured. The incident, which occurred on Saturday, 8 November 2025, involved a 7-seater vehicle carrying passengers returning from a church service in Kroonstad to Sasolburg. Emergency services responded swiftly, but the loss of young lives has sparked renewed calls for road safety measures in the province.
According to Free State Department of Health Emergency Medical Services (EMS) spokesperson Mr. SS Towa, the crash resulted in multiple casualties. “We regret to report that a fatal accident occurred outside Viljoenskroon on the R76, resulting in the loss of lives and multiple injuries,” Towa said in a statement. The department extended condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
Casualties and Immediate Response: A Breakdown of the Incident
The vehicle, believed to be overloaded or involved in a single-vehicle rollover based on similar past incidents in the area, led to the following reported injuries and fatalities:
- Adults:
• 1 Moderately Injured
• 1 Slightly Injured - Children:
• 2 Critically Injured
• 3 Moderately Injured
• 3 Slightly Injured
• 3 Declared Dead on Scene
Emergency services, including paramedics from the Free State EMS and law enforcement from the South African Police Service (SAPS), arrived promptly to the scene. The injured were transported to nearby facilities for urgent care: the PAX Community Health Centre in Viljoenskroon and Boitumelo Regional Hospital in Kroonstad. The critically injured children were prioritized for advanced treatment, with reports indicating they were stabilized en route.
Investigators are examining the cause, which could involve factors like driver fatigue, road conditions, or mechanical failure – common in rural highway crashes. The R76, a key route connecting Kroonstad, Viljoenskroon, and Sasolburg, has a history of accidents due to its single-lane design and high traffic from commuters and church groups, especially on weekends.
