Gauteng – 12 young learners have tragically lost their lives in a horrific accident in the Kokosi-Wedela area in Merafong. The Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Matome Chiloane, has voiced his deep sorrow over the accident that took place on Wednesday morning. The unfortunate event has deeply shocked the local community and has claimed the lives of 11 learners from Rocklands Primary School and one learner from Laerskool Blyvooruitsig, along with the driver of the mini-bus.

Early this morning, the Gauteng Department of Education was alerted to the distressing report of a private scholar transport mini-bus involved in a severe accident. It is alleged that a bakkie rear-ended the mini-bus, causing it to overturn and subsequently catch fire. The incident occurred at approximately 6:45 AM, and police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.

In addition to the fatalities, seven other learners have sustained injuries and have been rushed to the nearest medical facility for immediate treatment. The condition of these injured learners remains critical, and medical staff are doing everything possible to provide urgent care.

The department has swiftly responded by dispatching its Psycho-Social Support team to both schools affected by this tragedy. “Counselling services will be made available to all learners and staff members to help them cope with the emotional aftermath of this tragedy,” the department stated.

MEC Matome Chiloane, who has visited the scene and the schools, expressed his profound grief. “I am profoundly saddened by this tragic event. The loss of our children is a devastating blow to our community, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased and injured learners. We wish to extend our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and both schools’ entire community during this incredibly difficult time. We also wish all injured learners a speedy recovery,” he stated.

The Gauteng Department of Education remains committed to offering continuous support to the affected families and the broader school community during this challenging period. In light of the incident, the department urges all drivers, especially those involved in scholar transport, to exercise extreme caution on the roads to prevent such devastating accidents in the future.
