A 45-year-old traditional healer from Thabong in Welkom, Free State, has been arrested for the kidnapping of a child at the Boitumelo Junction mall.

The incident, which occurred on Saturday, January 6, 2024, initiated a search by the South African Police Service (SAPS) after a mother, 33, reported her one-year-nine-month-old daughter missing at Thabong Police Station.
Preliminary investigations, conducted by SAPS members and the Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offenses Unit, included reviewing video footage from the mall, which revealed a man taking the child and driving away with her in a sedan.
The search led police to Extention 15 Hani Park Bronville, where the child was found safe and returned to her parents on January 7, 2024. The 45-year-old suspect has been arrested for kidnapping and will soon appear in Welkom Magistrate Court.
District Commissioner of Lejweleputswa, Maj Gen Tholie Afonso, emphasized the importance of parents keeping a close watch over their children, especially while out shopping, and knowing their whereabouts at all times.
