Tourism with Google
South Africa’s Minister of Tourism, Patricia de Lille, has recently entered into a partnership with global tech giant, Google, in an effort to enhance the country’s tourism sector and provide digital training and support to its stakeholders. The agreement was signed in Cape Town on Monday, with the aim of promoting South Africa as a prime tourist destination and leveraging Google’s technological expertise to boost economic growth and job creation.
De Lille has long been focused on growing tourism to its full potential, recognizing the importance of unlocking the power of technology in the sector. This partnership with Google aligns perfectly with her mission, as stated in the Tourism Sector Green Paper, to address the lack of support mechanisms for the tourism sector, particularly small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs), to adapt to a digital future and technological advancements.
The visionary partnership between Google and the Ministry of Tourism seeks to leverage each party’s strengths for mutual benefits, without any monetary exchanges. Google will provide support to the Ministry by granting access to its initiatives and programs in South Africa that are beneficial to the tourism sector.
Dr. Alistair Mokoena, Country Director for Google South Africa, expressed his excitement about collaborating with the Department of Tourism and signing the letter of intent. Google, as a company dedicated to organizing and making the world’s information universally accessible and useful, is eager to roll out various programs in conjunction with the department. These programs will fast track digital transformation in the sector, help with digital skills, and showcase South African tourism through Google Arts & Culture platform.
The primary goal of this collaboration is to harness Google’s technological expertise to support the Ministry of Tourism’s efforts in promoting South Africa as a prime tourist destination. The areas of collaboration include gaining insights into global travel trends, conducting studies on the impact of digital platforms, offering skills training programs like the Google Hustle Academy and master classes, supporting tourism start-ups through initiatives like the Startup Accelerator and Black Founders Fund, showcasing South African tourism sites and cultural heritage through Google Arts and Culture Portal, and creating a tourism thought leadership seminar to explore the opportunities and impacts of online content and digital platforms in the sector.
Through these initiatives, the Ministry of Tourism aims to equip local entrepreneurs with the digital skills necessary to effectively market their offerings online, thereby attracting a wider audience of travelers. Additionally, the collaboration with Google will offer governments and tourism promotion agencies the opportunity to learn global best practices in utilizing digital platforms for economic growth.
