According to police reports, the tour guide, who was working in Mozambique, was driving a vehicle to pick up guests from South Africa to drop them off in Mozambique. In an attempt to cross a low water bridge over the Komati River, the vehicle was swept away by the strong currents. Fortunately, the tour guide was rescued by the joint efforts of the police divers and the SANDF, utilizing a helicopter for the operation.

Unfortunately, two other men are still missing after also being swept away in the river. One man, whose identity is unknown, was attempting to cross the same low water bridge and was washed away on December 28, 2023.

The search for him is ongoing. Additionally, a man from Kanyamazane ran into a nearby river after an alleged quarrel on the same day and has not yet been found.

Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, a police spokesperson, urged the public to avoid risking their lives by attempting to cross low lying bridges during rainy days.

The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, praised the rescue team for their efforts and pleaded with members of the public to exercise caution during adverse weather conditions.
