The International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) has released its highly anticipated annual ranking of the Top 10 Strongest African Leagues for the year 2024. This ranking, spanning from 1 January to 31 December 2024, evaluates the overall strength and performance of leagues based on their clubs’ results in domestic championships, cup competitions, and international tournaments.
Here is the official ranking for 2024:
1. Egypt Nile Premier League 🇪🇬
• The Egyptian league continues to dominate African football, with clubs like Al Ahly and Zamalek showcasing consistent success in both domestic and CAF competitions. Al Ahly’s CAF Champions League triumphs have bolstered the league’s position as Africa’s strongest.
2. Morocco Botola Pro 🇲🇦
• Home to globally competitive clubs like Wydad Casablanca and Raja Casablanca, the Botola Pro remains a powerhouse in African football. Moroccan teams consistently shine in CAF tournaments, enhancing the league’s reputation.
3. Algerian Ligue Professionnelle 1 🇩🇿
• Algeria’s top division maintains its place among Africa’s elite, with clubs such as CR Belouizdad and ES Sétif performing admirably in CAF tournaments. The league’s competitive nature makes it a regular fixture in the top three.
4. Tanzania Ligi Kuu Bara 🇹🇿
• Tanzania’s league has risen rapidly, driven by clubs like Simba SC and Young Africans (Yanga SC). Their strong performances in CAF competitions and the league’s growing investment have cemented its place in the top five.
5. Tunisian Ligue Professionnelle 1 🇹🇳
• Tunisia’s long-standing football tradition keeps its league among the strongest. Clubs like Espérance and Étoile du Sahel remain competitive on the continental stage.
6. Official PSL (South Africa) 🇿🇦
• South Africa’s Premier Soccer League (PSL) remains one of the continent’s most commercially successful leagues. Teams like Mamelodi Sundowns dominate domestically and consistently perform well in CAF competitions, bolstering the league’s ranking.
7. Angola Girabola 🇦🇴
• Angola’s Girabola league continues to impress, with teams like Petro de Luanda making deep runs in continental competitions. The league’s quality and competitiveness remain a testament to Angola’s football growth.
8. DR Congo Linafoot 🇨🇩
• Despite financial challenges, Linafoot remains competitive thanks to clubs like TP Mazembe and AS Vita Club. These teams’ historic performances in CAF tournaments keep the league in the top 10.
9. Nigeria Premier Football League 🇳🇬
• Nigeria’s top division has a rich football history and immense talent. Clubs like Enyimba and Rivers United ensure the league remains a force on the African football scene.
