By Thys Khiba – A 27-year-old suspect, Matthew Lani is expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ court on charges of impersonating a medical doctor, on Tuesday, 31 October.

This comes after his arrest by the security personnel at Helen Joseph Provincial hospital on Sunday, 29 October.
The Hawks provincial spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogalesaid it has been alleged that the suspect was seen on Friday, 27 October, at the hospital reportedly making videos and hospital staff was informed to be on the lookout for him.
“On Sunday, the suspect was seen in the hospital premises and apprehended by the security guards then handed over to the Brixton police,” said Mogale.
Meanwhile, self-proclaimed doctor is accused of using the credentials of a practicing doctor to fool other hospital staff.
“Another case of impersonating was opened at Tembisa where the same suspect is alleged to have utilised the credentials of a practicing doctor to fool other hospital staff.”
His legal representative, attorney Dumisani Mabunda said Lanidenied allegations levelled against him.
“He informed me that he would go to hospital regularly to actually get his medication. So on a regular basis he would take videos and all of that, but in a nutshell is not a doctor,” said Mabunda.
