Possibility of Thundershowers and Cold Conditions Expected in Gauteng: South African Weather Services Warns
Gauteng is bracing for thundershowers, cold, and windy conditions expected to hit the province on Sunday afternoon, according to a statement from the South African Weather Services. The recent drop in temperatures across the country is set to persist, with weather experts predicting these conditions may continue until Monday.
“SEVERE WEATHER ALERTS”:
The South African Weather Services has issued several warnings due to the impending severe weather conditions. The following regions are expected to be particularly affected:
IMPACT-BASED WARNINGS:
- Yellow Level 6 Warning:
Disruptive rain leading to flooding of settlements, roads, and bridges is anticipated in the coastal and adjacent interior of the eastern half of the Eastern Cape. Some communities may find themselves temporarily cut off, posing a danger to life. - Yellow Level 2 Warning:
Disruptive rain forecasted to cause flooding in settlements, roads, low-lying areas, and bridges in the southern escarpment of the Eastern Cape and along the coast of the western half of the Eastern Cape. - Yellow Level 2 Warning for Damaging Wind and Waves:
Coastal regions between Cape Point and Coffee Bay are expected to experience localised disruptions to harbours and ports, difficult driving conditions, and choppy seas. There is also a risk of coastal infrastructure damage in exposed bays. - Yellow Level 1 Warning for Severe Thunderstorms:
Strong damaging winds and hail are expected over the North West, eastern parts of the Northern Cape, Free State, Gauteng, and the northern interior of the Eastern Cape. These storms may also bring disruptive rain, leading to localised flooding.
ADVISORIES:
Very cold, wet, and windy conditions are set to commence on Sunday over the southern parts of the Northern Cape, the central and eastern interior of the Western Cape, and Free State. These conditions will likely spread to the northern high grounds of the Eastern Cape by Monday, with potential snowfall on the high grounds of both the Western and Eastern Cape as well as over the southern parts of the Northern Cape.
Precautionary Measures for Residents:
In view of the expected harsh weather, the Tshwane municipality urges residents to take necessary precautionary measures to ensure safety. The following steps are recommended:
- Fire Safety:
In case of fire danger near dwellings, vegetation or veld fires, dial the toll-free emergency number 107. - Carbon Monoxide Safety:
Avoid burning charcoal indoors while sleeping, as it emits deadly amounts of carbon monoxide. - Heating Safety:
Only use fuels designed for your heating units and avoid the improper use of space heaters, including izimbawula, braziers, and electric, gas, and paraffin heaters. - Controlled Burning:
No unapproved controlled burning should be carried out during this period.
