Former Public Protector Professor Thuli Madonsela has been appointed to the International Council of Arbitration for Sport (ICAS) in Lausanne, Switzerland. This appointment fills the vacancy left by the late Justice Yvonne Mokgoro, who passed away in May 2024.
Madonsela’s Appointment and ICAS’s Role
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) selected Madonsela to serve the remainder of the 2023–2026 term on ICAS. Established in 1994, ICAS comprises 22 members with legal expertise and oversees the administration and finances of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). CAS is a globally recognized institution responsible for resolving disputes in the sports sector through arbitration.
Madonsela’s Distinguished Career
Professor Thuli Madonsela is renowned for her contributions to law and social justice in South Africa. She served as the Public Protector from 2009 to 2016, during which she investigated and addressed issues of maladministration and corruption. Since January 2018, she has held the Law Trust Chair in Social Justice at Stellenbosch University, focusing on advancing social justice and human rights.
Filling the Void Left by Justice Yvonne Mokgoro
Madonsela’s appointment follows the passing of Justice Yvonne Mokgoro in May 2024. Justice Mokgoro was a trailblazer in South Africa’s legal landscape, serving as the first black woman on the Constitutional Court from 1994 to 2009. Her contributions to law and justice were profound, and her death was a significant loss to the legal community.
