The Free State Hawks Serious Corruption Investigation team have arrested three female traffic officers aged 43, 44, and 45 on Saturday, 14 October for alleged acts of corruption and demanding a R2 000 bribe from a truck driver instead of issuing a fine.

This comes after they discovered an apparent Road Traffic Act transgression.

“It is alleged that the officers stopped a truck between Hennenman and Kroonstad on 14 October 2023 for a roadside inspection,” said Hawks provincial spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Zweli Mohobeleli.

The driver informed his employer about their alleged demand of R2000.

The latter immediately alerted the police.

An entrapment operation was conducted which led to the arrest of the three officers.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Kroonstad Magistrates’ court on Monday, 16 October 2023 for corruption.

The provincial Head of the Hawks, Major General MokgadiBokaba sent a message of appreciation to the truck owner for reporting the crime.

“Law enforcement officers must know that the Hawks have a bird’s view of their actions. Anytime they accept a bribe, they could be walking into a trap,” she warned.

This is a developing story.
