Welkom
The High Court in Welkom has sentenced three accused individuals to two life sentences and a total of 79 years in jail for the gruesome murder of Nini Pule, a student at the Central University of Technology (CUT) in Welkom.
The tragedy unfolded on May 13, 2021, when Nini Pule was reported missing after her boyfriend, Malefetsane Mpotle, claimed that they had been hijacked while traveling together. Mpotle, accompanied by his girlfriend’s three-year-old son, presented a harrowing tale of victimization and danger to the authorities at Theunissen Police Station.
However, what initially appeared to be a carjacking quickly unraveled as evidence mounted against Mpotle. Police spokesperson Captain Stephen Thakeng revealed that the vehicle was located later that day in Winburg, and a grim discovery was made in the backseat. Nini Pule’s lifeless body was found with her throat slit and her limbs bound with brown sellotape.
Following a meticulous investigation, two additional suspects were apprehended in August 2021, both connected to the heinous crime. Accused number 1, Mojaki Pattern Phara, and accused number 2, Sebongile Matsorotso Soul, were found guilty on multiple charges, including murder and theft of a cellphone. Mpotle, the boyfriend, was also implicated in the crime and arrested at his parents’ home in Phomolong Hennenman.
The Welkom High Court wasted no time in delivering a verdict, and on September 13, 2023, justice was finally served. Accused number 1, Phara, received a life sentence for murder and an additional three-year term for theft. Accused number 2, Soul, was handed a 23-year prison sentence for murder and three years for cellphone theft.
The most severe punishment was reserved for accused number 3, Mpotle, who was not only found guilty of murder but also faced charges of theft and defeating the ends of justice. The court sentenced Mpotle to life imprisonment for murder, three years for cellphone theft, and an additional 12 months for obstructing the course of justice.
