The WorldSkills Team South Africa has officially embarked on its journey to Lyon, France, to compete in the prestigious 47th WorldSkills International Competition, which takes place this week from 10 to 15 September 2024. This global event is set to bring together over 1,500 competitors from 65 countries, all vying for top honours in 61 different skills categories. The competition provides a unique platform for participants to exchange skills, experiences, and technological innovations.

In South Africa, the WorldSkills initiative is spearheaded by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). This initiative aligns with the DHET’s “Decade of the Artisan” programme, which aims to address the critical shortage of skilled artisans in the country by promoting vocational training and artisanal skills. By participating in this competition, the DHET hopes to raise awareness about the importance of apprenticeships and vocational careers, particularly for high school learners and tertiary students, thereby easing the skills shortage in South Africa.

The South African team is composed of talented young artisans from various educational institutions, including Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges, Technical High Schools, universities of technology, and private training colleges. These competitors have been carefully selected and trained, representing South Africa’s best in trades such as manufacturing, engineering, information technology, creative arts, and transportation logistics .

The skills competition will feature six main sectors: construction and building technology, social and personal services, creative arts and fashion, information and communication technology, manufacturing and engineering technology, and transportation and logistics. South Africa’s competitors will face off against peers from around the world, benchmarking their skills at an international level.

Captain Loraine Earle of the DHET stated, “This competition offers participants life-changing pathways that involve additional study and work experience, which can lead to further professional development opportunities.” She added that WorldSkills South Africa plays a critical role in connecting all stakeholders within the apprenticeship and artisan development space .

One of the standout aspects of the event is the One School One Country programme, which fosters cultural exchange between competitors and local schools in the host country. South Africa’s team is paired with the Léonard de Vinci School in Lyon, where they will engage in discussions about technical education, share insights into South African vocational training, and participate in cultural exchanges.

This programme offers the South African team a chance not only to showcase their skills but also to represent their country’s rich cultural heritage on a global stage .
