The Ministry of Electricity recently announced that the return to service of unit 1 at Kusile Power Station marks a critical milestone in the quest to recover South Africa’s economy. Eskom, the power utility company, revealed that the unit had returned to service a month and a half ahead of schedule since it was taken offline late last year.

Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, the Minister in the Presidency for Electricity, welcomed this development. The return of unit 1, along with units 2 and 3, which had also been out of commission due to safety concerns with the structural integrity of the stack since August 2022, adds 800MW onto the grid. This represents significant overall improvements to generation performance, with unit 3 returning back to service two months ahead of schedule on September 29, 2023.

The Ministry emphasized the impact that the return of this unit will have on South Africa’s economy. It is seen as a critical milestone in the quest to recover the country’s economy, protect jobs, and improve the quality of life. The Minister is also focused on bolstering the country’s electricity generating capacity by expanding and strengthening transmission infrastructure to accommodate new renewable generation capacity.

The Ministry congratulated Eskom’s Generation team for their hard work in bringing back stability and credibility to the Eskom generation fleet, and for reducing the intensity and severity of load shedding.

The return of the Kusile units demonstrates the team’s commitment to restoring stability to the energy sector and ensuring a reliable power supply for the nation.
