The National Reading Coaliation (NRC) is continuing with its efforts to extend reading networks across all ages through the monthly President’s Virtual Reading Club (VRC) sessions.

The NRC has so far coordinated four VRC sessions where several books have been reviewed and used to drive discussions of the reviewers’ life experiences and how they are relatable to our daily lives.

The NRC will again host the 5th session of the Virtual Reading Club on 22nd April 2021 to discuss Mohale Mashigo’s debut Novel, The Yearning.

The session will be joined by former Miss South Africa 2010, Author & Business woman, Bokang Montjane – Tshabalala and South African anti-apartheid activist, actress, storyteller, poet, playwright, director and author Gcina Mhlope, who will be the two guest reviewers for the book discussion.

Since launching on 15 February 2019, the National Reading Coalition (NRC) has supported President Cyril Ramaphosa’s call to improve reading nationally – from the classroom to the living room. In the endeavour to build a community around reading, the NRC continues to network reading clubs nationally to extend the permeation of the reading culture across the country.
Through the VRC sessions, we have created an opportunity for influential people in the society to share their life experiences and respond to the President’s call of encouraging South Africans to participate in the Presidential Reading Circle.

About the National Reading Coalition

The National Reading Coalition (NRC) is a coordinating structure where all reading initiatives and interested stakeholders can come together to share knowledge and successful learning experiences.

The NRC was established by the National Education Collaboration Trust (NECT) and the Department of Basic Education (DBE) as a comprehensive national response to the reading challenges facing South Africa.

The NRC is coordinating the development and implementation of a comprehensive national reading improvement strategy. The NRC functions as an agile, self-sustaining network of reading initiatives.
