In a surprising turn of events, seven expelled African National Congress (ANC) councillors from the Mangaung metro municipality have decided to contest the upcoming by-elections as a united front called the “Mangaung Seven.”
This unprecedented move has raised eyebrows and sparked curiosity in the Free State.
The African National Congress (ANC) in the Free State fired eight of its councillors with immediate effect in the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality council for allegedly defying the party line and caucus decision not to attend a council sitting until certain issues were clarified.
Amongst those who have been expelled by the ANC in Mangaung, the Deputy Executive Mayor, Mapaseka Mothibi-Nkoane and former Speaker Stefani Lockman-Naidoo are also included in the list of fired councillors.
Out of the seven expelled councillors, four were ward councillors who will be participating in the next scheduled by-elections on the 19th of July, 2023, as independent candidates under the banner of the Mangaung Seven. This decision reflects their determination to continue serving the community despite being ousted from the ANC.
These four candidates, namely Mpho Mokoakoa, Lelala Makoa, Chabedi Rampai, and Lehloonolo Mogolo, have duly followed the rules set by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and are registered as independent candidates.
The decision to contest the by-elections as independent candidates carries various implications. It showcases the resilience and determination of these councillors to continue their work, undeterred by party politics. The fact that they are banding together under the Mangaung Seven banner suggests a unified front committed to addressing the key issues affecting the municipality.
As the by-elections approach, all eyes will be on the Mangaung Seven and their campaign strategies. Will they be able to rally support and make a significant impact on the political landscape? Only time will tell.
