The funeral service for the late former Minister Pravin Gordhan will take place at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in Durban on Thursday. Gordhan, aged 75, passed away on Friday following an illness. His death marks the end of a long and impactful career in public service, spanning decades and leaving an indelible mark on South Africa’s political landscape.
In honour of his contributions, President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared a Special Official Funeral Category 2, which includes ceremonial elements conducted by the South African Police Service. The funeral will begin at 10:00, followed by a private cremation ceremony, in accordance with Gordhan’s Hindu beliefs.
Gordhan’s family has requested that instead of floral tributes, mourners make donations to charities of their choice or to the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation. This is a fitting tribute, reflecting Gordhan’s lifelong dedication to social justice and the fight against inequality.
A Legacy of Public Service
Gordhan’s political career was deeply intertwined with South Africa’s transition to democracy. He first rose to prominence as Commissioner of the South African Revenue Service (SARS) in 1999, where he played a pivotal role in transforming the institution into a modern, efficient tax-collecting agency. He later served as Minister of Finance during two separate periods (2009-2014, 2015-2017), navigating the country through difficult financial times.
In 2018, Gordhan took up the position of Minister of Public Enterprises, a role in which he became a central figure in the government’s fight against state capture and corruption. He served in this capacity until his retirement in early 2024.
Tributes Pour In
Tributes have been pouring in from across the political spectrum and beyond. Edward Kieswetter, the current SARS Commissioner, praised Gordhan for his role in laying the foundations of a modern tax system. The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation, of which Gordhan was a long-time ally, expressed deep sorrow at his passing, calling him “a giant in many ways, but a humble and loving family man” .
Political leaders, including former Minister Mac Maharaj, have reflected on Gordhan’s lifelong commitment to public service, highlighting his resilience and dedication, particularly in his battles against corruption and state capture. President Ramaphosa remarked on Gordhan’s profound contributions, saying, “As we mourn his passing, we remain grateful for his life of sacrifice and service” .
Controversial Legacy
Despite the widespread praise, Gordhan’s legacy is not without its detractors. His firm stance against corruption and state capture often put him at odds with certain political factions, particularly the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF). In a notably hostile response, the EFF issued a statement expressing no sorrow over his passing, a reflection of the deep political divisions that Gordhan navigated throughout his career .
