The African National Congress (ANC) commemorated the 107th anniversary of the birth of Oliver Reginald Tambo, a revered anti-apartheid leader, visionary, and former president of the ANC, on 27 October 2024. Known affectionately as “OR,” Tambo was instrumental in steering the ANC through some of its most challenging periods, particularly during the decades of exile when the organisation was banned in South Africa.
In a media statement, ANC National Spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu-Motsiri praised Tambo’s legacy, describing him as a “global icon” who fought tirelessly for justice, equality, and the dignity of South Africans. The statement highlighted how Tambo’s life was defined by the hardships endured under apartheid and how his leadership contributed to the establishment of South Africa’s democratic society, which has now marked 30 years since its first democratic elections in 1994 .
The ANC invoked Tambo’s warning about “the enemy” and “wedge drivers,” individuals who seek to create divisions within the organisation. This message resonates today, as the ANC faces internal and external challenges that threaten its unity and purpose. Tambo’s call for vigilance against such divisive forces underscores the ANC’s ongoing mission to maintain solidarity and focus on the National Democratic Revolution, a principle central to Tambo’s leadership during the struggle years .
The commemoration included a gathering of ANC members at Tamboville Cemetery in Watville, Benoni, Gauteng, where they paid tribute to Tambo’s contributions and renewed their commitment to his vision. ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa has previously described Tambo as the “glue” that held the movement together, emphasizing that Tambo’s legacy continues to inspire the ANC’s efforts to address contemporary socio-political challenges, including economic inequality and social justice .
As the ANC reflects on Tambo’s legacy, it remains committed to upholding the values he championed, including unity, ethical leadership, and a relentless pursuit of justice. The ANC’s statement concluded with a call for South Africans to remember Tambo’s selfless contributions and to honour his vision by supporting the principles of democracy and human rights that he fought to establish.
