The Department of Home Affairs has announced that its branches will remain open for extended hours. On election day, 29 May 2024, offices will open at 08:00 and close at 21:00, providing ample opportunity for citizens to apply for and collect their IDs.

These extended hours are not only for ID collections and applications; the offices will also be addressing issues such as duplicates, amendments, rectifications, and “dead-alive” cases, provided the necessary supporting documents are on hand.

In addition to the extended office hours, mobile offices are making a return to deliver IDs to remote areas where initial applications were received. Local offices are collaborating with stakeholders, including councillors, to communicate the dates, times, and venues for these mobile office visits to residents.

Mobile offices will complement services provided by identified local offices, making it even more convenient for citizens to collect their essential documents. Deputy Minister Njabulo Nzuza expressed the importance of this initiative, particularly for first-time applicants. “We invite people who have applied for their IDs, particularly young people who are first-time applicants, to come to our offices to collect their documents. This initiative gives people more options to collect their enabling documents,” he stated.

Deputy Minister Nzuza further encouraged clients who have received SMS notifications indicating that their identification documents are ready to take advantage of this extended service period. “We encourage clients who have applied for identification documents and have received their SMS notifications, to seize this opportunity by visiting their Home Affairs office to collect these critical documents,” he said.

To streamline the process, clients can book appointments to collect their Smart ID Cards and Green barcoded ID books using the Branch Appointment Booking System (BABS), accessible at www.dha.gov.za. However, the department has assured that booking an appointment is not mandatory. Clients are welcome to visit the offices without prior appointments.
