The Democratic Alliance (DA) stands firmly against the decision to appoint Dan Marokane as the new CEO of Eskom. They argue that Marokane, as a former executive at Eskom, is not the fresh perspective that the entity needs to recover from its current state of collapse.

The DA believes that Marokane’s appointment only perpetuates the existing culture of impunity at Eskom and will do nothing to improve its financial position or reduce loadshedding.

The Minister of Public Enterprises, Pravin Gordhan, defended the appointment of Marokane, citing his qualifications and experience as a strong fit for the role. He highlighted Marokane’s background as a Chemical Engineer with an MBA and more than 20 years of senior leadership experience. Additionally, out of 409 applicants, Marokane emerged as the top candidate through a rigorous selection process. His previous experience at Eskom, as well as his recent assignment at Tongaat-Hulett, was presented as evidence of his preparedness to lead the financially distressed business.

The DA’s Shadow Minister of Public Enterprises, Dr Mimmy Gondwe, voiced strong opposition to Marokane’s appointment, stating that the ANC government’s decision to recycle an old Eskom executive only serves to maintain the status quo and prolong the nation’s grip on loadshedding. Gondwe emphasized the need for an outsider with proven technical and engineering expertise to lead Eskom in addressing its current challenges. She expressed concern that Marokane’s appointment will not inspire confidence and may further worsen Eskom’s financial position.

Dr Gondwe outlined five urgent and pressing issues that she believes Marokane’s turnaround plan for Eskom should address. These issues included improving generation capacity, accelerating the unbundling process, prioritizing renewable energy projects, getting the Koeberg life extension project back on track, and addressing Eskom’s poor financial position. She warned that if Marokane’s plan does not include solutions to these issues, he should decline the offer.

The DA’s stance is clear – Marokane’s appointment as the new CEO of Eskom is emblematic of the ANC’s failure to learn from past mistakes and prioritize the country’s needs over political considerations. They view his appointment as a continuation of the ANC’s policy of cadre deployment, rather than bringing in technocrats with the necessary expertise to manage South Africa’s ailing state-owned enterprises.
