Police Minister Bheki Cele confirmed on Sunday, a team of detectives has been tasked with finding criminals responsible for kidnapping and killing young women in Bloemfontein, Free State.

Cele expressed his concerns about the number of women, children and vulnerable groups who are continuing to be killed by criminals.

“The provincial commissioner of the Free State has assembled a dedicated team of detectives to investigate all these cases and has mobilised all the necessary resources and intensified all efforts to apprehend the killers and kidnappers of the these young women.

“Investigations are supported by national resources,” said Cele said.

Cele claimed gender-based violence and femicide-related crimes remained a priority for his ministry, and officers were advised to continue to improve their services to victims and survivors of these crimes.

This comes after a body of a 16-year-old Machaka Radebe was found in an open field near Phase 9 with a stab wound on 04 December 2023.

Radebe went missing from her home in Thakalekwala Street, Rocklands in Bloemfontein on Saturday, 02 December 2023. Her family received messages demanding cash and threats kill to her if none was sent.

Cele and Free State MEC for education, Makalo Mohale attended the funeral of Brebner High School learner, Radebe in Bloemfontein.

“Since last week, the intelligence community, through working with SAPS specialised units and intervention teams, are working tirelessly to bring perpetrators of this senseless killings to book and I promise to deliver the news of their/his arrest to the family myself,” said Cele.

Meanwhile, police confirmed another woman’s body, 28-year-old Kelebogile Seramone, was found on 23 October. The search for two other women, 23-year-old Lerato Masiu and 22-year-old Mamello Motaung, is still continuing.
