Taliban Bans Windows
By Thabo Mosia
The Taliban’s supreme leader has issued a decree prohibiting the construction of windows in residential buildings that overlook areas commonly used by women, such as courtyards and kitchens. Existing windows with such views are to be blocked to prevent “obscene acts.”
This directive is part of a series of measures that have progressively restricted women’s freedoms in Afghanistan since the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021. Women have been banned from post-primary education, employment in many sectors, and access to public spaces like parks. Additionally, new laws prohibit women from singing or reciting poetry in public and encourage them to “veil” their voices and bodies outside the home.
The international community has expressed deep concern over these developments. The United Nations has denounced the Taliban’s actions as establishing “gender apartheid,” highlighting the severe impact on women’s rights and freedoms.
These restrictions have profound implications for Afghan society, effectively erasing women from public life and limiting their participation in various aspects of daily life. The cumulative effect of these measures is a significant regression in gender equality and human rights in Afghanistan.
