The Taliban has officially submitted a request to participate in the upcoming BRICS summit, which will take place in Kazan, Russia, from October 22 to 24, 2024. This development is part of the group’s broader efforts to engage with international bodies, despite being diplomatically isolated since their takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021.

The request was made by Nooruddin Azizi, the Taliban’s acting Minister of Industry and Trade, through a formal letter addressed to Yuri Ushakov, an aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin. The letter outlines the Taliban’s intentions to send a delegation, led by Abdul Ghani Baradar, one of the group’s senior political figures. Russia has acknowledged receiving the request but has not officially confirmed whether the Taliban will be allowed to participate, as the group remains designated as a terrorist organization by Russia .

This request is significant as it comes amid growing discussions about the potential removal of the Taliban from Russia’s list of terrorist organizations. However, no country has officially recognized the Taliban as the legitimate government of Afghanistan. The Taliban’s presence at the summit, should they be invited, would add to the ongoing geopolitical complexities surrounding BRICS, especially with the group’s recent expansion to include countries such as Egypt, Iran, and Saudi Arabia .

At the summit, BRICS members are expected to discuss major economic and political issues, including trade partnerships, the global energy crisis, and the ongoing push for de-dollarization. If accepted, the Taliban’s participation could provide the group with a significant platform for international engagement and further their diplomatic goals .
