A suspect was killed, and two others were injured in a dramatic shootout with police in Kwaggafontein, Mpumalanga, early on Monday morning. The incident occurred during a South African Police Service (SAPS) operation aimed at curbing serious criminal activities, including extortion, attempted murder, and related offences.
According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Donald Mdhluli, the operation, which began around 04:00, was initiated after SAPS Intelligence provided crucial leads regarding the location of the suspects. The suspects had reportedly converged in Kwagga A, Kwaggafontein, a known hotspot for criminal activity.
“When the suspects noticed the presence of the police, they opened fire on our officers. In accordance with their training and the principle of self-defence, our police officers returned fire. One suspect was fatally wounded in the shootout, while two others sustained injuries and were arrested. These injured suspects are currently under police guard in the hospital, receiving medical attention. Thankfully, none of our officers were injured during the incident,” Colonel Mdhluli stated .
Despite the successful apprehension of two suspects, a fourth suspect managed to flee the scene. Authorities believe that this suspect may have sustained injuries during the exchange of gunfire. The SAPS has issued an urgent appeal to the public, particularly to medical facilities, to report any individual seeking treatment for gunshot wounds or injuries consistent with a violent encounter .
To intensify efforts to capture the remaining suspect, a 72-hour activation plan has been launched, involving all relevant law enforcement agencies. The Acting Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Mpumalanga, Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, emphasized the SAPS’s commitment to maintaining public safety and sending a clear message to those engaging in criminal activities.
“We will not tolerate any acts of violence or intimidation, and we will vigorously pursue those who threaten the well-being of our citizens. We encourage community members to come forward with any information that could assist in apprehending the suspect on the run. We thank our officers for their bravery and commitment to upholding the law. Together, we can ensure that our communities remain safe and secure,” Major General Mkhwanazi remarked .
