In the early hours of Monday, an alleged ATM bombing turned violent in Tumahole, resulting in a deadly shootout with the police at Boithabisong Supermarket. Authorities are now seeking the public’s assistance in locating the remaining suspects involved in the incident.
Police spokesperson Sgt Mahlomola Kareli reported that officers responded to the scene at approximately 2 a.m., upon receiving reports of the ATM explosion at the corner of Koloane and Tumahole Street. “Members rushed to the scene and on arrival they were met with gunfire. During the exchange of gunfire, one suspect, estimated to be in his late twenties, was shot and killed while a security vehicle was riddled with bullets from the fleeing suspects,” Kareli detailed.
The confrontation ensued following the alleged ATM bombing by about a dozen heavily armed individuals. “It is alleged that about 12 heavily armed suspects were spotted at the scene after the explosion. The suspects managed to take the money and fled the scene on foot,” Kareli added, outlining the modus operandi of the perpetrators.
The violent exchange did not only impact the suspects and law enforcement; an innocent bystander found himself caught in the crossfire. “It was also discovered that a male bystander was shot and wounded in the foot during the shootout,” Kareli stated, shedding light on the unintended consequences of the shootout. Efforts are now underway to trace and apprehend all individuals involved in the crime, with a manhunt launched to secure their capture.
In the wake of this troubling event, Tumahole police have initiated investigations for charges of attempted murder and murder, demonstrating the seriousness of the offense and the law’s response to it. Sgt Kareli concluded with an appeal to the community for cooperation: “Anyone who might have information on the whereabouts of these suspects is urged to contact Provincial Organised Crime Unit member Detective Sergeant Malefane Motloung on 073 380 4603 or call Crime Stop on 08600 10111, or drop an anonymous tip-off on the MySAPS App.”
