Suspect in Goodwood Arms Cache and Drug Bust to Appear in Athlone Court

A suspect arrested during a routine stop and search over the weekend is scheduled to make his first court appearance in Athlone, Western Cape, on Monday. The arrest, led by the vigilant members of the police’s Flying Squad, unveiled an alarming arms cache and a substantial quantity of drugs in Goodwood.

Vigilant Flying Squad Members Strike Gold

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the incident unfolded when alert Flying Squad officers noticed a suspicious silver Ford double cab bakkie. A routine stop and search procedure quickly turned into a major bust, revealing an unlicensed 9mm firearm, drugs, and a significant amount of cash.

From Routine Stop to Major Seizure

The 28-year-old driver of the vehicle was swiftly arrested and interrogated, a move which led authorities to an apartment in the Bergzicht complex, also in Goodwood. The apartment, registered in the suspect’s name but ostensibly unused as a residence, was found to harbor a staggering 19 firearms of various calibers. Among the weaponry were an AK47 assault rifle, a shotgun, and other automatic and semi-automatic firearms, along with drugs valued at R3 million.

SAPS Statement Highlights Gangsterism Issue

In a statement, the South African Police Service commented, “We have reason to believe that the apartment was never used as a residence, but rather as a storage facility for the firearms and the drugs.” SAPS further intimated that the discovery could lead to more arrests as the investigation deepens. “As our investigation unfolds, the possibility that more suspects can be apprehended is not excluded. The arrest of the suspect and subsequent seizure are deemed a step in the right direction to tackle gangsterism in the Province.”

Commendation by Provincial Commissioner

Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile, praised the diligence of the Flying Squad members who made the arrest. “This could be the tip of the iceberg,” he said, signalling an exhaustive and ongoing investigation.
