A 51-year-old man, Mbuyiseni Ntuli, who caused a car crash involving former President Jacob Zuma’s vehicle, has been released on bail. The Eshowe Magistrate’s court in northern KwaZulu-Natal set the bail at R500 after Ntuli was arrested and charged with drunken driving and reckless and negligent driving.
The collision occurred on Thursday night on the R66, a key route between Nkandla and Eshowe, when Ntuli’s vehicle crashed into Zuma’s official armoured state car. Responding officers confirmed that Zuma was in transit at the time, though details regarding his condition or that of anyone else involved in the crash were not immediately made available. The case has been temporarily put on hold, with a court adjournment until May 3, allowing further investigations to proceed.
This incident has ignited a fervour of concern and speculation within political circles, particularly amongst members of the uMkhonto we Sizwe party (MK), who view it as more than just an accident but a potential threat to Zuma’s life. An MK party spokesperson elaborated on their worries, saying, “President Zuma’s life, yes, is under threat, it has always been under threat. Fact. But how can it not be under threat when… And then all of a sudden there’s an accident,” suggesting the occurrence might have been a deliberate attempt to harm the former President, who has been actively campaigning in KwaZulu-Natal.
In response to these allegations and concerns regarding the adequacy of Zuma’s security detail, Minister of Police, Bheki Cele, stepped forward to defend the measures currently in place. Cele asserted that Zuma is afforded the same level of protection as other former Heads of State in South Africa, aiming to dispel any doubts regarding the effectiveness and integrity of the security surrounding him. This statement came in the wake of claims by the MK party that the safety of the former President could be jeopardized due to the supposed use of outdated vehicles once utilized by another former President, FW de Klerk.
