SUPERSPORT FIGHT BACK TO HOLD SUNDOWNS IN TSHWANE DERBY

SuperSport United came from two goals down to hold Mamelodi Sundowns to a 2-2 draw in a 2021/22 DStv Premiership clash at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Wednesday.

Sundowns looked well on course for another victory but were denied by a SuperSport side who also became the first team to score agains the defending champions in the league this season.

A point, though, was enough to stretch Sundowns’ lead atop the league standings to six points. SuperSport jumped up to fourth and remain eight points behind their Tshwane rivals.

Neo Maema opened the scoring on the night in spectacular fashion on the cusp of half-time to give Sundowns a narrow lead at the break; as he continued to build on his terrific run of form.

Peter Shalulile doubled the Brazilians’ lead four minutes after the interval, but SuperSport halved the deficit in the 69th minute when Gamphani Lungu became the first person to beat Denis Onyango in the league this season.

Ronwen Williams was then on hand to deny Sundowns a third and the superb save from point-blank range proved pivotal in the outcome of the match, as moments later, Teboho Mokoena levelled matters with a free-kick to earn Matsatsantsa a point.
