SuperSport United bounced back to winning ways in the DStv Premiership when they defeated Maritzburg United 2-0 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium on Friday night.
The win saw Matsatsantsa remain second on the league standings, but they reduced log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns’ lead to 19 points and SuperSport will now face Golden Arrows on March 5.
While the Team of Choice remain in relegation playoff spot (15th) on the standings and they will be desperate for a victory when they lock horns with Cape Town City on March 4.
The Team of Choice threatened the first nine minutes into the game when Wayde Jooste forced goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner into a fine save from a free-kick and Karim Kimvuidi missed the target from the rebound.
Maritzburg were able to contain SuperSport and the score was 0-0 during the halftime break in Atteridgeville.
Coach Fadlu Davids decided to make a tactical change prior to the start of the second-half as he pulled out attacking midfielder Kimvuidi and introduced centre forward Friday Samu.
However, the hosts looked dangerous with their aerial play and they managed to break the deadlock in the 69th minute when Jamie Webber’s cross was headed home by Kegan Johannes to make it 1-0 to SuperSport.
Coach Gavin Hunt’s side then searched for another goal and Bradley Grobler sealed SuperSport’s 2-0 win when he netted in the 79th minute and it was his 100th league goal since making his debut in 2007 as a Platinum Stars player.
