Sundowns Chairman Tlhopie Motsepe

Mamelodi Sundowns chairman Tlhopie Motsepe is stepping up his involvement in football development by enrolling in the ongoing CAF C License coaching course in Gauteng. The 30-year-old leader is among 30 participants in this key programme, which aims to boost technical, tactical, and leadership skills for aspiring coaches. This move comes as South African football works to raise its standards, with more club officials and former players getting qualified to guide the next generation. Motsepe, who already holds a D License from 2023, joins notable figures like ex-Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Virgil Vries and Kenneth Simmons, son of Chiefs’ marketing director Jessica Motaung.
The course highlights a growing trend in local football, where executives are gaining hands-on knowledge to better run clubs and spot talent. As Sundowns dominates the Premier Soccer League (PSL) with back-to-back titles, Motsepe’s push for coaching creds shows his commitment to the game’s growth beyond boardroom decisions.

Course Structure and Objectives

The CAF C License course is split into two phases to give participants a solid grounding in modern coaching. The first phase kicked off on Saturday, 4 October 2025, and wraps up on Saturday, 11 October 2025. The second phase is set for 6 to 12 December 2025, allowing time for practical work in between.
Led by instructor Simon Tshowa and Banyana Banyana goalkeeper coach Cameron Cox, the programme focuses on improving coaches’ abilities in key areas. “The course is aimed at giving coaches an improved technical, tactical and leadership abilities,” as outlined in official updates. 0 It’s a step up from the entry-level D License, preparing holders to manage youth teams or assist at senior levels in African football.
This qualification is part of the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) framework, which requires coaches to climb the ladder from D to A levels for top jobs. In South Africa, it’s run through partnerships like the one between the Gauteng Football Association and the Gauteng Department of Education, making it accessible to a mix of pros and newcomers. 3 Classes cover everything from game analysis to player psychology, with hands-on sessions to apply new skills.

Motsepe’s Journey in Football Leadership

At just 30, Tlhopie Motsepe has made waves as Sundowns’ chairman since taking over in 2021. Son of mining magnate Patrice Motsepe—who heads CAF—the young exec has steered the club to multiple trophies, including league wins and strong runs in the CAF Champions League. 8 His D License, earned in 2023 alongside figures like Gavin Hunt’s daughter Kaitlin, was his first foray into coaching quals. 9
Motsepe’s enrollment signals a hands-on approach, much like legends such as Jomo Sono, who coached while owning clubs. It could help him better understand the technical side, aiding decisions on hires like current coach Manqoba Mngqithi. 13 Fans see it as a smart move, with some joking he might one day step onto the touchline himself.

Notable Participants and Their Backgrounds

The course draws a diverse group, blending experience with fresh faces. Former Baroka and Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Virgil Vries, now 34, brings his pro playing days to the mix. The Namibian international, who hung up his gloves in 2023 after stints in the PSL, aims to transition into coaching. 5
Kenneth Simmons, son of Jessica Motaung, adds a family legacy touch. Growing up around Chiefs’ operations, he’s keen to build his own path in football management or coaching. 6 Other attendees include community coaches and scouts, all eyeing better roles in the sport.
This mix fosters networking, with participants sharing insights from different levels of the game. It’s part of SAFA’s push to grow coaching talent, addressing gaps in youth development across provinces.
