Stilfontein taxi violence pushes MEC Lehari to implement extraordinary measures

Thys Khiba – The North West MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management, Sello Lehari declares Extra Ordinary Measures to deal with the resurgent incidents of taxi related violence in Stilfontein and other affected towns in the province.

“It has not been easy to come to this conclusion nor had this given us any pleasure to take these steps”, said Lehari.

In August 2021, police in the province launched a manhunt for the perpetrators behind a shooting in which three people were killed and six injured.

The incident took place in Orkney on Monday at around 19:00.

“Whilst on duty at the Community Service Centre (CSC), members heard gunshots not far from the police station, and moments thereafter a man who was bleeding profusely entered the CSC armed with a pistol. The victim told members that he was apparently shot at the Engen garage on the corner of Shakespeare and Flecker roads in Orkney,” police spokesperson Captain Sam Tselanyane said.

While addressing taxi operators and associations in Stilfontein, Lehari indicated the brashness of these intrusions is so brazen that this leaves us with no choice but to restore law and order’

Law enforcement officers are expected to not be lenient to anyone violating the law.

“I do hope that all associations will ensure that their members comply and work with us to stem the tide and save lives,” Lehari said.

In Stilfontein near Klerksdorp two lives have been lost within a week.
