By Thys Khiba – He insisted he would not quit his role but was given no choice in the matter as Villa’s board acted swiftly to remove him.
The English Premier League side Aston Villa Football Club has officially announced that the Head Coach Steven Gerrard has left the club with immediate effect after Gerrard’s side suffered a 3-0 defeat against Fulham at Craven Cottage.
Harrison Reed fired the hosts into a 36th – minute lead. And the Cottagers doubled their lead just minutes later as Mitrovicslotted home a penalty before Tyrone Mings’ late own goal from Neeskens Kebano’s cross.
“We would like to thank Steven for his hard work and commitment and wish him well for the future,” A club spokesperson said.
After playing 11 Premier League games, Villa lost 6 of them under the guidance of the former Liverpool midfielder.
“I’ve been sending messages to the fans for the last few weeks because I certainly share their frustrations and their pain. I’m someone who is honest. I know that they’re not enjoying it at the moment – I’m certainly not – so we’ll see what happens moving forward. But you know and I know I’m in a very difficult position right now,” said Gerrard.
On November 11, 2021, Gerrard replaced Dean Smith at Villa Park. He lasted less than a year before becoming the fourth top-flight manager to lose his job this season, following Scott Parker, Thomas Tuchel and Bruno Lage.

Gerrard indicated he was in a “very difficult position” straight after Villa’s hefty loss in South West London.
He insisted he would not quit his role but was given no choice in the matter as Villa’s board acted swiftly to remove him.
Former Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel and ex-Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino have been linked with the role, but whether either man could be enticed to Villa Park remains to be seen.
