Steve Komphela
By Thabo Mosia
Mamelodi Sundowns proudly announced on Saturday, 6 July 2024, that veteran coach Steve Komphela has rejoined the club. Komphela will now take on the role of Senior Coach, working closely alongside Manqoba Mngqithi and the rest of the technical team. The announcement comes on the heels of Rhulani Mokwena’s departure, which was finalised through a mutual agreement earlier this week.
Rhulani Mokwena Departs
Rhulani Mokwena’s exit from the club was confirmed on Wednesday, bringing to an end his tenure as Head Coach. Sundowns and Mokwena parted ways amicably, marking a significant change in the club’s coaching staff. The club expressed its gratitude to Mokwena for his efforts and contributions during his time in charge.
Steve Komphela’s Statement
Expressing his enthusiasm, Steve Komphela stated, “I am very excited to be back at Mamelodi Sundowns where I was always inspired and treated with respect and love. I am committed to contributing to the Club achieving its goals in South Africa and on the African Continent.”
Komphela’s return has injected renewed energy into the Sundowns’ camp as they gear up for the new season. The team is currently in training in South Africa and is scheduled to depart for Austria in a few days as part of their pre-season preparations.
A Familiar Face
Steve Komphela’s reappointment at Sundowns comes less than a month after his departure from Moroka Swallows. He briefly led the team through a challenging period before parting ways. Prior to that, Komphela had a short stint with Golden Arrows, where he was appointed head coach on 7 March 2024.
During his seven-month tenure at Moroka Swallows, the club faced significant administrative issues, including missing two DStv Premiership matches in December 2023 and January 2024, which led to fines from the Premier Soccer League. Differing opinions between Komphela and Swallows’ management regarding the club’s operations ultimately led to his departure.
Sundowns’ Future Prospects
Mamelodi Sundowns are determined to make their mark in the upcoming season. The club is committed to competing in all major competitions and is especially honoured to be one of four football clubs representing the African continent in the historic FIFA Club World Cup 2025.
The return of a seasoned coach like Steve Komphela is viewed as a strategic move to bolster the team’s prospects. With his extensive experience and deep understanding of South African football, Komphela is expected to play a crucial role in achieving Sundowns’ ambitious goals both domestically and on the continental stage.
As the Mamelodi Sundowns camp prepares for the upcoming challenges, fans and analysts alike are keen to see how the collaboration between Komphela, Mngqithi, and the technical team will shape the future of this illustrious club.
