Stellenbosch FC Beat Orlando Pirates 3-2 in DStv Premiership Match

Stellenbosch FC Claims Come-From-Behind Victory Over Orlando Pirates

Stellenbosch FC pulled off a thrilling 3-2 victory against Orlando Pirates in Friday night’s DStv Premiership match at the Orlando Stadium. The hard-fought win elevated Stellies to the third spot on the league standings, showcasing their prowess in the competition. On the other hand, the Carling Knockout champions will now take coach Jose Riveiro’s All-Star team on 6 January in Polokwane, solidifying their position as a force to be reckoned with.

In contrast, Pirates slipped down to the fifth spot on the league standings after recording their second successive loss. Following this defeat, the team will play host to Chippa United in a league clash on 14 February after the AFCON break, eager to reclaim their winning form.

The match itself was filled with excitement as both teams attacked each other with speed right from the first minute. The Buccaneers had the upper hand as they were awarded a penalty just after the half-hour mark. Thabo Moloisane was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box, leading to Tapelo Xoki seizing the opportunity to beat goalkeeper Sage Stephens and give the hosts the lead.

As the game progressed, a more entertaining second half unfolded as Pirates extended their lead to 2-0 in the 59th minute. Evidence Makgopa showcased his skill with a cheeky backheel from close range after being set up by Fortune Makaringe. However, Stellies did not back down and responded by applying pressure on the hosts’ defence. The visitors managed to pull one back in the 69th minute as Iqraam Rayners beat keeper Melusi Buthelezi, narrowing the score to 2-1.

The momentum continued to shift in Stellenbosch’s favor as they managed to equalize two minutes later. Despite Buthelezi’s impressive save to deny Antonio van Wyk, Devin Titus netted from the rebound, leveling the score to 2-2. With the match hanging in the balance, the visitors pushed for the winning goal and managed to secure it with 13 minutes left on the clock. A delightful cross from Van Wyk was turned home by fellow substitute Andre de Jong, sealing Stellenbosch’s 3-2 win.

The lineup for the match was as follows:

**Pirates:** Buthelezi, Xoki, Ndah, Hotto, Makaringe, Timm (Baloni 87′), Ndlondlo, Maswanganyi (Mofokeng 87′), Lorch, Kimvuidi (Dlamini 74′), Makgopa (Pule 74′)

**Stellenbosch:** Stephens, van Rooyen, Toure, Moloisane, Sibande, Nduli (Van Wyk 46′), Adams, Macheke (Mgaga 67′), Oura (De Jong 67′), Titus (Boji 83′), Rayners (Palace 83′)
