John Steenhuisen, leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA), has promised that if his party is re-elected in the Western Cape with an outright majority, they are committed to creating 800,000 new jobs in the province over the next five years.

Steenhuisen delivered a speech at party’s Worker’s Day event in Lentegeur, Mitchells Plain today.

This pledge comes against a backdrop of deep unemployment crises plaguing South Africa, with Steenhuisen spotlighting the failure of the current ANC-led government to curb the skyrocketing unemployment rate.

During their Manifesto Launch in February, Steenhuisen unveiled his party’s pledge to create 2 million jobs in South Africa if elected into power.

Addressing the workers day , Steenhuisen took the opportunity to reflect on both the significance of Worker’s Day and the pressing challenge of unemployment that faces the nation. “Freedom means very little without a job,” Steenhuisen remarked, drawing attention to the national unemployment rate which has surged from 20% in 1994 to over 32% today. The situation is even more dire among the youth, with seven out of every ten young people unable to find work. He went on to label the day as “Workless Day” in South Africa, owing to the ANC’s legacy of “destroying jobs.”

However, Steenhuisen was quick to differentiate the Western Cape from the rest of the country, describing it as the sole province where Worker’s Day can genuinely be celebrated due to its significantly lower unemployment rate. He highlighted the DA’s success in the province, stating that “Over the past five years, the DA-run Western Cape has created 8 out of every 10 net new jobs in the whole South Africa.”

Steenhuisen’s pledge of creating 800,000 new jobs in the Western Cape was accompanied by a critique of the ANC’s governance at the national level. He argued that the province’s potential for development and job creation is being held back by the “corrupt ANC national government,” which controls critical services like trains, police, and ports that are underperforming compared to those managed by the DA-led provincial government.

The DA leader also pointed fingers at what he calls an “unholy alliance” between the ANC, the South African Communist Party, and COSATU, accusing them of creating a system of economic exclusion that traps over 30 million people in poverty. In contrast, the DA proposes to scrap policies it deems harmful to job creation, such as cadre deployment and race quotas, while introducing initiatives like a Youth Employment Opportunity Certificate to support unemployed youth.

Ending his speech, Steenhuisen sought to connect with the everyday struggles of South Africans affected by unemployment, from single mothers unsure of their next meal to young graduates resorting to begging in their graduation gowns. “Help is on the way from the DA,” he promised, positioning the DA as the only party capable of rescuing South Africa from unemployment.
