STEASA Joins dtic-Led Outward Selling Mission to Nigeria and Ghana to Boost Steel Exports
The Steel Tube Export Association of South Africa (STEASA) has joined the dtic-led Outward Selling Mission to Nigeria and Ghana to boost steel exports, with the organisation among 15 companies participating in the initiative from 25–30 August 2025 aimed at strengthening trade ties and tapping into West Africa’s growing industrial and mining sectors under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) framework.
dtic Facilitates Key Export Drive Under EMIA Programme
The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic) is spearheading an Outward Selling Mission (OSM) to Nigeria and Ghana from 25–30 August 2025, as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance South Africa’s trade and investment relations with these West African powerhouses. This initiative falls under the Export Marketing and Investment Assistance (EMIA) programme, a financial support scheme designed to help South African businesses explore new export markets, promote their products, and attract foreign investment. The EMIA covers costs such as travel, accommodation, and exhibition participation, enabling companies to engage directly with potential buyers and partners.
Fifteen companies from various sectors have been selected for this mission, focusing on high-potential areas like manufacturing, engineering, and resources. The delegation will visit Lagos and Abuja in Nigeria, followed by Accra and Kumasi in Ghana, participating in business-to-business meetings, site visits, and networking events. This structured approach aims to facilitate deals, foster partnerships, and position South African firms as reliable suppliers in Africa’s fastest-growing economies. Nigeria, with its GDP exceeding $440 billion in 2024, and Ghana, boasting a 6.5% growth rate in the same year, represent gateways to West Africa’s market of over 400 million consumers, offering vast opportunities in infrastructure, mining, and energy sectors.
The mission aligns with South Africa’s broader economic diplomacy strategy, emphasising the AfCFTA’s role in boosting intra-African trade, which currently stands at just 18% of the continent’s total exports compared to 60% in Europe. By reducing tariffs and non-tariff barriers, the AfCFTA is projected to increase Africa’s GDP by $450 billion by 2035, creating new avenues for value-added exports like steel products.
STEASA Eyes Expansion in Hydraulic, Pneumatic, and Mining Sectors
As one of the key participants, STEASA is poised to showcase South Africa’s expertise in steel tube and pipe manufacturing, targeting expansion into West Africa’s hydraulic, pneumatic, and mining industries. Established to develop sustainable and internationally competitive export markets for carbon steel tube and pipe, STEASA represents major producers like Macsteel, Robor, and Hall Longmore, collectively exporting over 50,000 tonnes annually valued at R1.2 billion in 2024.
Chief Executive Officer Keitumetse Moumakoe highlighted the mission’s strategic importance: “Our motivation for participating in this mission is clear – we want to expand our value-added services into two of the biggest markets in West Africa. The structured platform provided by the dtic will enable us to engage with companies operating in the hydraulic space, where demand for our products and services continues to grow.” Moumakoe added that Nigeria and Ghana’s rapid industrialisation and expanding mining activities make them ideal entry points: “Nigeria and Ghana are gateways to West Africa. Their rapid industrialisation and expanding mining activities make them sound markets for our products and services. We already have representation in Ghana, and through this mission, we are seeking to establish a solid footprint in Nigeria.”
STEASA will present a range of specialised engineering and reconditioning services, including honing, chroming, boring, bronze plating, precision grinding, and welding. Its product lineup features high-end solutions such as cylinder rods, honed barrels, chrome bars, honed tubes, hydraulic cylinder kits, and conveyance pipes used in oil, gas, and bulk water infrastructure. These offerings cater to the growing demand in Nigeria’s
