By Thys Khiba – The St Albans inmate whose images have gone viral on social media has been formally charged and could face other charges for tailoring offender uniform as this is against DCS policies.
According to the Department of Correctional Services mobile phones are defined as contraband in their centres. Illegal access and usage of mobile phones by inmate is a punishable offence.
“The Department of Correctional Services has confiscated a mobile phone used by an inmate to flamboyant post his image on social media,” said Singabakho Nxumalo, Department of Correctional Services Spokesperson.
Nxumalo told IOL News that the inmate is incarcerated at St Albans Correctional facility in the Eastern Cape Region and moved to a Special Care Unit after been identified.
He confirmed that an investigation will launched against the inmate.
“DCS is deeply incensed by this behaviour and there shall be strong action and consequences,” said Nxumalo.
Meanwhile DCS senior officials have been accused of granting special privileges to one of Gqeberha’s high-profile murder suspects Arnold
Terblanche.
This comes after it was reported that the accused on more than one occasion asked to have contact visits with his son and girlfriend, which were granted by the DCS senior officials.
The 55-year-old Terblanche who has allegedly orchestrated the murder of his estranged wife Vicki, has been denied bail twice.
Currently former businessman Terblanche is in custody in the Medium A section of the St Albans Correctional Facility where he is not allowed any contact visits.
Terblanche made his last handwritten request to see his family on the 16th of August 2022.
“I am respectfully asking to have a contact visit from my children on Thursday 18 August 2022,” said in the short note.
