The Springboks are gearing up to host Italy in a two-Test series set to take place next July, marking a significant event in South Africa’s 2025 rugby calendar. This anticipated series, confirmed by South Africa’s rugby governing body, will see the Springboks clashing with Italy, also known as “The Azzurri,” for the first time since their last encounter in Genoa two years ago. Although the specific match dates and venues have yet to be finalised, this series promises to offer thrilling rugby action, with the Springboks eager to continue their dominant history against Italy.
The matches will unfold across two of South Africa’s renowned rugby venues, which have previously hosted games in cities like Pretoria, Durban, Bloemfontein, Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Mbombela. Alongside Italy, South Africa is also expected to welcome a second-tier rugby union nation, with Georgia being the most likely contender for another engaging July fixture.
A Glimpse at Italy’s Remarkable Six Nations Campaign
Italy arrives in South Africa following an impressive performance in the Six Nations Championship. The Azzurri clinched victories against Scotland and Wales, held a thrilling draw with France, and experienced defeats to England and Ireland. This marked one of Italy’s best campaigns in recent years, and they are looking to leverage this momentum as they prepare to face the reigning world champions, South Africa.
The historical rivalry between the Springboks and Italy has been largely one-sided. Since their first meeting in Rome in 1995, a year etched into rugby history as South Africa claimed its inaugural Rugby World Cup title, the Springboks have maintained a dominant record. They have won 15 out of 16 matches against Italy, with their sole defeat occurring in 2016. In their latest clash in Genoa, the Springboks emerged victorious with a commanding 63-21 win, underscoring their prowess on the field.
Salmaan Moerat Sidelined for November Tour Due to Knee Surgery
As the Springboks prepare for their upcoming November tour to Britain, they will be without the services of lock forward Salmaan Moerat, who is undergoing knee surgery. The 26-year-old Moerat, known for his resilience and leadership, was set to be a key player in the tour. Unfortunately, he will not recover in time to join the team for their matches against Scotland, England, and Wales.
Moerat, who plays for the Cape Town-based Stormers, has been a valuable asset to the Springboks, making seven appearances this year and captaining the team on three occasions when Siya Kolisi was rested. His absence presents a challenge for Head Coach Rassie Erasmus, who will need to rely on other seasoned players to fill the gap in the lock position.
Assistant Coach Dawie Snyman confirmed that Moerat’s expected return is at the end of November, too late for the November tour but potentially in time for future engagements. The Springboks’ lock lineup will likely feature a combination of Eben Etzebeth, who recently became the most capped Springbok with 128 appearances, along with Ruan Nortje, RG Snyman, and Jean Kleyn.
A Look Ahead: Springboks’ November Tour Fixtures
The Springboks’ upcoming November tour to Britain will kick off with a match against Scotland in Edinburgh on November 10. This will be followed by a clash with England at Twickenham Stadium in London on November 16 and conclude with a match against Wales in Cardiff on November 23. This tour is particularly significant as it brings together some of the very teams that South Africa defeated in France last year to secure their record fourth Rugby World Cup title.
The Springboks’ winning streak and recent world championship triumph have placed them under the spotlight as they take on these formidable northern hemisphere teams. Scotland, England, and Wales will undoubtedly be eager to challenge the champions, promising intense and competitive rugby action that fans worldwide are eager to witness.
