Springboks

London – The Springboks have made history by becoming the first South African team to win back-to-back Rugby Championship titles, clinching the 2025 crown with a nail-biting 29-27 victory over Argentina in the sixth and final round at Twickenham’s Allianz Stadium.

This marks the sixth time the Boks have lifted the regional trophy, solidifying what many are calling the most dominant era in Springbok rugby. As the world’s top-ranked team, South Africa outscored Los Pumas 4 tries to 3 in a match that went down to the wire, edging out New Zealand on points difference after both sides finished with 19 points in the standings. Captain Siya Kolisi praised the squad’s unbreakable winning mentality, instilled by coach Rassie Erasmus, as key to their success. Speaking after the game, Kolisi reflected on the team’s resilience following an early loss to Australia. “It has really being a tough rugby championship. You can see how close it was, what happened this morning as well, and Argentina have been playing really well and they challenged us a lot today … and once again, the way we started the first game, you could not say that we would be here. The belief we have in ourselves, honestly, what coach Rassie has come and instilled since 2018 – the mindset that he has created amongst the team – you dont feel in any moment that you are going to lose. It doesn’t matter how it looks and that is how to (go) because I know how it feels on the other side when you know how difficult it is to get a win,” Kolisi said.

The win caps a remarkable tournament for the Springboks, who bounced back from an opening defeat to claim the Freedom Cup, Nelson Mandela Plate, and Qatar Airways Cup along the way. As celebrations echoed from London to South Africa, the ANC and fans alike hailed the achievement, with the ruling party noting it adds to the team’s back-to-back World Cups and Lions Series triumph. This dominant run underlines the Boks’ global supremacy, but questions linger about the unusual neutral venue for the decider.

Tense Battle at Twickenham Seals the Title

The match at London’s Allianz Stadium – a neutral ground for Argentina’s ‘home’ fixture – was a fitting finale to a fiercely contested 2025 Rugby Championship. The Springboks needed a bonus-point win to secure the title outright, and they delivered with four tries against Argentina’s three, holding off a late Pumas rally for the 29-27 result. Malcolm Marx scored a double for South Africa, helping them edge ahead despite Argentina’s spirited comeback.

The Boks started strong but faced a resilient Los Pumas side that pushed them to the limit. With New Zealand having beaten Australia earlier in the day, the pressure was on South Africa to avoid a slip-up. Their victory not only retained the Championship but made them the first Springbok team to win it consecutively, surpassing Australia’s four titles while trailing New Zealand’s 20. The neutral venue at Twickenham added an extra layer of intrigue, drawing over 70,000 fans for what felt like a global showcase.

Kolisi Credits Erasmus for Instilling Winning Culture

Springbok captain Siya Kolisi was quick to attribute the team’s success to the mindset forged by coach Rassie Erasmus since 2018. Reflecting on the tournament’s ups and downs, including the opening loss to Australia, Kolisi emphasised the squad’s unshakeable belief. His comments highlight how Erasmus has transformed the Boks into a unit that thrives under pressure, turning potential defeats into gritty wins.
This ethos has propelled South Africa to the top of world rankings and a string of trophies, including back-to-back World Cups in 2019 and 2023, the British & Irish Lions series, and now consecutive Championships. Kolisi’s leadership, both on and off the field, has been pivotal, with his post-match words resonating with fans back home.

Historic Milestone in Springbok Dominance

The 2025 title is South Africa’s sixth Rugby Championship win, adding to triumphs in 2019, 2023, and 2024. It’s the first time the Boks have defended the crown, a feat that cements this era as the most successful in the nation’s rugby history. With the team holding the top global ranking, their dominance is clear, outpacing rivals in consistency and depth.

The tournament saw tight races, with South Africa and New Zealand both on 19 points, decided by points difference. Argentina pushed hard throughout, while Australia showed flashes but couldn’t sustain. The Boks’ ability to recover from setbacks, like the Wallabies defeat, showcases their mental toughness.

Celebrations and Reactions Back Home

South Africans erupted in joy, with the ANC leading congratulations: “The ANC congratulates the Springboks on defeating Argentina to win the 2025 Rugby Championship, adding to their back-to-back Rugby World Cups, Lions Series, Freedom Cup, Nelson Mandela Plate, and Qatar Airways Cup. #Springboks #ForeverGreenForeverGold.” Social media buzzed with pride, fans calling it a testament to national unity.
The win at Twickenham, a historic venue, added symbolism, though some questioned the neutral site for the decider. Still, it spotlighted rugby’s global appeal, with the Boks proving their mettle far from home.
