Springboks vs Argentina
By Sello Masilo
The Springboks secured their first Castle Lager Rugby Championship title in five years with a decisive 48-7 victory over Argentina (Los Pumas) at Mbombela Stadium, Nelspruit. This historic win not only ended their championship drought but also marked a significant milestone as Eben Etzebeth became the most-capped Springbok in history, playing his 128th match for South Africa.
South Africa’s relentless performance was spearheaded by Aphelele Fassi and Pieter-Steph du Toit, both scoring two tries each, along with stellar contributions from Cheslin Kolbe, Malcolm Marx, and Jesse Kriel. From the outset, the Springboks were determined to make a statement, taking an early lead and maintaining momentum throughout the match. By halftime, they led 27-7, setting the tone for a commanding second half that saw the Pumas struggling to recover.
Early Dominance
The Springboks made an explosive start, capitalizing on Argentina’s penalties and errors. Within the first few minutes, after sustained pressure on the Pumas’ defense, Fassi broke through to score the opening try. This was quickly followed by another try from Du Toit, giving South Africa a 14-0 lead within the first quarter of the match. Jaden Hendrikse, handling the kicking duties in place of Manie Libbok, converted both tries and added a penalty to further solidify their early advantage.
Argentina responded with a try from fly-half Tomas Albornoz after a well-executed set play, but their momentum was short-lived. Disciplinary issues began to plague the visitors, with Santiago Chocobares forced off due to injury and Mateo Carreras receiving a yellow card for a dangerous aerial challenge. Fassi took full advantage of the situation, adding his second try before halftime. Kolbe’s brilliant individual effort saw him score just before the break, leaving the score at 27-7.
Second Half Struggles for Argentina
The second half saw Argentina falter further as their discipline unraveled. Pablo Matera’s red card for a dangerous shoulder charge was a significant blow, effectively ending any chance the Pumas had of staging a comeback. Despite a few handling errors from the Springboks, the home side continued to dominate, with Malcolm Marx scoring from a powerful maul to stretch the lead.
Du Toit added his second try of the match in the closing stages, and Jesse Kriel sealed the victory with a perfectly timed finish off a deft Handre Pollard kick. Pollard’s accurate conversions helped round off a perfect day for the Springboks, ensuring they lifted the Rugby Championship trophy for the first time since 2019.
A Day to Remember for South African Rugby
This victory was particularly sweet for the Springboks, who exacted revenge on Argentina following their narrow 29-28 defeat in Santiago del Estero the previous week. Beyond the scoreline, the match held deeper significance for South Africa, with Eben Etzebeth’s record-breaking appearance adding an emotional layer to the celebration. The towering lock’s contribution to South African rugby was acknowledged by teammates and fans alike, with captain Siya Kolisi expressing heartfelt gratitude for Etzebeth’s leadership and friendship over the years.
Kolisi, reflecting on the Springboks’ journey, praised the team for their resilience and determination in bouncing back from the previous week’s loss. “It has been a journey and a half,” said Kolisi, underscoring the hard work and dedication required to reach this moment.
