South Africans are bracing for intense weather conditions as a significant spring storm approaches, bringing with it heavy rain, powerful winds, and a surprise cold front. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued several weather warnings across multiple provinces, advising residents to prepare for potential disruptions from Sunday through Tuesday.
The storm is expected to make landfall in the Western Cape on Sunday, affecting areas from the Cape Winelands to the Overberg and Garden Route, before moving eastward across the country. Gale-force winds of up to 65 km/h are forecasted for parts of the Cape, while gusts reaching 50 km/h could impact regions such as Gauteng, North West, Free State, and parts of KwaZulu-Natal. The combination of wind and rain may result in challenging conditions on major transport routes, including the N1 and N3 highways, where fallen trees, blowing dust, and reduced visibility are likely to complicate travel.
The SAWS has issued an Orange Level 6 warning for disruptive rain in certain areas, notably Cape Town and surrounding regions in the Western Cape, with flooding anticipated in low-lying areas. Coastal areas from Cape Agulhas to Plettenberg Bay may experience damaging waves and port disruptions. Inland, thunderstorms are expected to bring hail, lightning, and intense rainfall to parts of KwaZulu-Natal, Free State, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo, where Yellow Level 4 warnings are in effect.
As the storm progresses, localized flooding is expected in several regions, with the cold front bringing an unseasonably chilly spell to parts of the Western and Eastern Cape, as well as KwaZulu-Natal. While some areas may experience warm temperatures, the combination of rainfall and cloud cover will leave others in a cold, winter-like state, even as spring progresses.
Residents are urged to stay informed and take precautions, especially those in informal settlements or near rivers prone to flooding. SAWS warns that as conditions evolve, the storm could result in power outages, infrastructure damage, and hazardous driving conditions. They also advise travelers to delay journeys if possible and remain vigilant.
