Soweto Taxi Operators Block Roads Over Route Dispute, JMPD Urges Motorists to Avoid Area

Soweto Taxi

On Monday, Soweto taxi operators blocked roads between Orlando West and Mfulo due to an ongoing route dispute between the Witwatersrand African Taxi Association (WATA) and the Nancefield Dube West Taxi Association (NANDUWE). Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Xolani Fihla has urged motorists to use alternative routes.

The blockade has led to significant traffic disruptions, particularly at the intersection of Klipspruit Valley, Khumalo Road, and Sofasonke Street. Motorists are experiencing heavy delays as they divert from these closures, affecting Xorile Street and Martha Louw Street. JMPD officers are on-site managing the situation and advising extreme caution.

While responding to the scene, JMPD officers were involved in a crash resulting in injuries. A fatal accident in the same area involved five individuals, including two JMPD officers—one sustained serious injuries, and one fatality was reported. Two other individuals also sustained injuries.

Background of the Dispute

The conflict between WATA and NANDUWE over taxi routes in Soweto has been ongoing for over a decade, often escalating into violence. In January 2025, the Gauteng Provincial Regulatory Entity (GPRE) granted NANDUWE the right to operate on contested routes, a decision that WATA successfully challenged in court. The Johannesburg High Court interdicted the GPRE’s decision, citing the need for lawful administrative action.

Despite the court ruling, tensions have persisted. In April 2024, Gauteng’s Transport Department closed ranks and routes for both associations after their disputes turned violent, advising commuters to seek alternative transport.

Recent Developments

The recent blockade is a manifestation of the unresolved tensions between the two associations. The GPRE’s decision in January 2025 to grant NANDUWE rights to certain routes was met with resistance from WATA, leading to legal challenges and continued unrest.

Impact on Commuters and Residents

The ongoing disputes have severely impacted commuters and residents in Soweto. Road blockades and violence have disrupted daily life, forcing many to seek alternative transportation methods. The closure of taxi ranks and routes has left commuters stranded, highlighting the urgent need for a resolution.

Official Responses

Authorities have called for calm and are working to mediate between the rival taxi associations. The Gauteng Transport Department has previously intervened by closing ranks and impounding vehicles to prevent further violence. Law enforcement agencies continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure public safety.

Conclusion

The protracted dispute between WATA and NANDUWE underscores the complexities within South Africa’s taxi industry. As tensions escalate, the safety and well-being of commuters and residents remain a priority. A sustainable resolution is essential to restore normalcy and ensure the efficient operation of public transportation in Soweto.
