The latest statistics released by Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) reveal a positive development in the country’s employment landscape.
According to the Quarterly Labour Force Survey (QLFS), South Africa’s unemployment rate decreased by 0.3 of a percentage point to 32.6% in the second quarter of 2023.
During this period, approximately 150,000 more individuals found employment, resulting in a minor decrease in the unemployment rate. Additionally, the number of unemployed individuals fell by 11,000.
This positive trend in employment is further reinforced by a decrease of 94,000 discouraged work seekers and a net decrease of 1,000 in the economically inactive population.
The employment gains were primarily observed in the formal sector, with a notable increase of 143,000 jobs. The construction, trade, and community and social services sectors experienced the most significant employment gains, with 104,000, 92,000, and 63,000 jobs respectively.
However, the manufacturing, finance, transport, and utilities sectors experienced employment losses, recording decreases of 96,000, 68,000, 7,000, and 6,000 jobs respectively.
While the survey indicates an increase in youth employment during this period, Stats SA emphasizes that youth remain vulnerable to unemployment. The total number of unemployed youth between the ages of 15 and 34 decreased by 131,000 to 4.7 million, with an additional 105,000 individuals finding employment. This resulted in a decrease in the youth unemployment rate by 1.1 percentage points to 45.3% in Q2:2023.
Considering the provincial breakdown, the largest employment increases were observed in Limpopo (up by 80,000), the Western Cape (up by 54,000), and KwaZulu-Natal (up by 48,000). On the other hand, the Free State and Northern Cape experienced employment losses, with decreases of 59,000 and 17,000 jobs respectively.
Although these findings indicate a positive trend, it is crucial to address the persistent issue of unemployment, particularly among the youth. The South African government, private sector, and other stakeholders must continue to invest in initiatives that promote job creation and address the structural challenges facing the labor market.
