President Cyril Ramaphosa announced his new Cabinet during a public address on Sunday. The eagerly anticipated announcement has revealed Paul Mashatile as the newly appointed Deputy President, along with a fresh line-up of Ministers and Deputy Ministers. These leaders are expected to take their oath of office in the coming days, marking a significant milestone in South Africa’s democratic journey.
A Thoughtful Selection Process
During his address, President Ramaphosa emphasised that “several factors” were meticulously considered in the formation of the new national executive. This team is slated to serve the nation for the next five years, and the President highlighted the importance of creating an effective government.
“We have had to ensure that the incoming government will be effective, and that it will have people with the experience, skills, and capabilities to deliver on its mandate. It is important that we deploy into positions of responsibility people who are committed, capable and hardworking, and who have integrity,” President Ramaphosa stated.
He further elaborated on the need for inclusivity within the National Executive, ensuring that it accurately represents the diverse voices of South Africans. “We have had to ensure that all the parties are able to participate meaningfully in the National Executive and that the diversity of the views of South Africans is properly reflected. We have sought to ensure that the National Executive is representative of the people of South Africa, giving due consideration to gender, youth, demographics, and regional distribution,” he added.
Swearing-In Ceremony Details
The swearing-in ceremony for the newly appointed Ministers and Deputy Ministers is expected to echo the solemnity of President Ramaphosa’s own inauguration on 19 June. Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, or a delegate assigned by him, is anticipated to preside over the ceremony. This will be a moment of commitment to the nation as these leaders take their oath of office or solemn affirmation.
A Diverse and Inclusive Cabinet
President Ramaphosa reiterated that the new appointees are a reflection of South Africa’s rich diversity, being drawn from various regions and representing different demographics. “These men and women we have appointed to the executive are drawn from all corners of our country. They reflect the diversity of our nation. They have a responsibility to work together to serve the people as a whole,” the President declared.
