South African Weather Service Warns of Extremely High Fire Danger Across Multiple Provinces

South African Weather Service has warned of extremely high fire danger across multiple provinces. The forecaster highlighted risks in the extreme north-eastern parts of the Northern Cape, in places in the North West, north-eastern and central parts of the Free State, the north-eastern part of the Eastern Cape, northern parts of KwaZulu Natal as well as over parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga. This comes amid a sharp weather contrast, with cooler conditions in the south and warmer weather heightening fire risks in the north.

Details of the Fire Danger Warning

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued the alert for Friday, 22 August 2025, noting that conditions could lead to fires spreading fast. The Fire Danger Index (FDI) is above 75 in affected spots, meaning fires may start easily, burn hard, and cause harm to people, animals, homes, and land. Reduced visibility from smoke is also a worry, making roads unsafe.

This warning builds on recent patterns, with similar high risks noted earlier in the month. For instance, on 19 August 2025, extreme fire danger hit parts of the Northern Cape like Tsantsabane and Frances Baard. Now, the dry, warm air across central and north-eastern South Africa adds to the danger, especially with hot afternoons stressing plants and animals. SAWS maps show red zones for high FDI on 22 August, covering wide areas. Emergency teams are ready, urging people to avoid open flames and report smoke quickly.

KwaZulu-Natal on High Alert with Teams on Standby

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) has put disaster teams on standby for any fire outbreaks. This follows SAWS warnings for northern KZN, where dry conditions and winds could spark veld fires. Cogta MEC Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi called for care, saying, “Given the severe weather conditions, any open flame or discarded item can ignite a devastating fire.” He urged communities to avoid fires in open spots and put out all flames fully, especially for cooking or land clearing.

Specific areas at risk in KZN include Abaqulusi, Alfred Duma, Big Five Hlabisa, Dannhauser, Dundee (Endumeni), Jozini, Msinga, Mthonjaneni, Newcastle, Nkandla, Nongoma, Nquthu, uLundi, and Pongolo. Buthelezi also warned drivers not to toss cigarette butts and to pick up glass bottles, as they can focus sun rays and start blazes. He asked residents to watch out and report fires to local services right away. This echoes earlier alerts, like on 4 August 2025, when Cogta geared up for veld fires in north-eastern KZN. Sadly, past cold snaps led to nine fire deaths in July 2025, showing the real danger.

Yellow Level 2 Warning for Damaging Waves in the Cape

Alongside fire risks, SAWS issued a yellow level 2 warning for waves in the Northern and Western Cape. Waves of four to six metres are expected from the night of 22 August, peaking at seven metres in spots by Saturday, 23 August 2025. North-westerly winds up to 65 km/h, with gusts to 75 km/h, will hit from Cape Point to Cape Agulhas, then spread east to Plettenberg Bay. This mix could harm coastal spots, disrupt small ports, and make seas tough for boats and beach users.

The warning ties into a series of cold fronts, with the third hitting the south-west Cape on Friday, bringing showers. Similar alerts earlier in August warned of damaging interior winds and rain in the Western Cape. Authorities advise staying clear of the coast and securing boats.

Broader Weather Outlook Across South Africa

The weather shows big differences nationwide. Cooler, wetter air is set for the Western Cape and southern interior, with places like Cape Town at 16°C max on Friday. In contrast, warm to hot conditions rule in Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and parts of KZN, with Polokwane hitting 29°C, pushing fire risks higher.
Bloemfontein sees 23°C, while Durban stays at 22°C. Dry air in the north-east adds to fire worries. SAWS notes possible severe thunderstorms in some spots, leading to floods or property damage.
For 23 August, fire danger stays high in many areas, including Mogalakwena, Thabazimbi, and others across Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo. Waves continue to pose risks along the Cape coast.
